Day 113: Alleys and Ruins

Day 113: April 23, 2014: North Beach and Cathedral Hill

Just a lil’ walkabout today from North Beach over to Van Ness to check on the destruction at the Cathedral Hill Hotel.  Not too much remained.

Day 111: That Really Loud Orange Streetcar

20140421-Roll0043-19

Day 111: April 21, 2014: Market Street

You know the one, that bright orange Milan car. You hear it coming from blocks away, rattling up Market Street. Have you ever ridden it? I haven’t but always wonder if it’s as loud inside as it is from the street.

I see this car pretty much every time I’m on Market Street. I had kind of just assumed that this was because it’s too loud to miss, but it turns out that there are actually somewhere around 10 of these cars in the Muni fleet, with several orange ones. Orange is a good color for this city. 🙂

(Significantly overexposed shot on that same roll of long-expired and heat treated Fuji Velvia 50 – Slides don’t tend to hold up well with overexposure, in my experience, so I can only guess that the age has made it a bit less sensitive to light.)

Day 110: Morning in the Lower Haight

Day 110: April 20, 2014: Lower Haight

Morning wanders in the Lower Haight. I’m not 100% sure what I was doing here at the time, but the light was nice, and the crowds were gathering to catch a bus out to Golden Gate Park.

I notice that Greenburgers is another business gone between the time that I took the photo and the time that I post it.

Day 109: Golden Gate Park

Day 109: April 19: 2014: Golden Gate Park

Nutjobs and police patrols. Just a typical day in the park. Well, maybe not entirely typical.

With 4/20 right around the corner, the SFPD was out in full force around hippy hill this morning, gearing up for Sunday’s pot tourist shitshow, I imagine. Down at the other end of the park we had a couple guys with the Steger for Congress campaign plastering their Volvo with signs urging “Impeach Obama: Stop WWIII” and other crazy gems such as “Destroy the British Empire” and “End the Drought”.

Crazies abound.

Day 108: On the Edge of a Mission

PhotoExif - Camera: Canon EOS-3, Film: Fuji Velvia, Comment: Bus stop

Day 108: April 18, 2014: The Mission

Wandering the Mission with some Fuji Velvia 50 of unknown history. Most likely it’s at least 10 years expired and probably sat through some 100˚F+ weather in it’s time. I only had one roll, so the lessons I learn are relatively useless, but it seems to underexpose heavily and come out almost entirely pink.  Good for sunsets, not much good for most other things without some heavy color correction.

Day 106: Just the Classics

Day 106: April 16, 2014: Forest Knolls, SF

The streets of San Francisco. Today, yesterday, or 1959. The more things change, the more things stay the same.

Day 107: April 17, 2014: South San Francisco

This was a one-off kind of day. Shot on a run along the bay in South San Francisco. Mud, rocks, algae, water, and film. Just another day by the Bay. 🙂

Day 105: All Good Things Must Come to an End

Day 105: April 15, 2014: Back to the Bywater

One last walk through the Bywater before catching a flight back to SFO this afternoon. You are gorgeous, New Orleans. See you again soon, I hope.

It’s been a trip reliving my trip New Orleans back in April while sorting through these photos this week. As much work as this project has turned out to be, it keeps providing me with little moments that make it all worthwhile, always at unexpected times. Just as I start feeling stressed about falling so far behind in my posts, I come across something like this and discover that it’s been just long enough to bring back all the fantastic memories that had started to get pushed out of my mind as in favor of the present. I certainly can’t recommend this project to everyone, and I’ll definitely scale back next year, but it is its own reward and I’m continually excited by what I discover along the way. Feelin’ good today. 🙂

Day 104.4: April 14, 2014: New Orleans

It seems I took a lot of photos this day. This should be the last post, I think.

Once the rain cleared, I set off for a little walk in search of some potential viewpoints I had noticed over the course of the week. Not all of them panned out, but I did manage to get up high enough for a nice little view.20140414-Roll0042-29

This last building, mostly abandoned except for a small ground floor office for the surrounding parking lot, caught my eye. Very curious about its history.

Day 104.3: French Quarter in Yellow

20140414-Roll0041-16Day 104.3: April 14, 2014: French Quarter, New Orleans

With the music festival done, and the rain coming in, today was a great day to wander the French Quarter without the crowds. Such colorful. What yellow. Much damp. 🙂
