Happy Halloweaster from San Francisco! Hope you all had a good one out there. Our festivities were a bit dampened (soaked, actually) by some rather unpleasant rain, which unfortunately brought the Hunky Jesus contest to an early end in Dolores Park. All of the Jesuses (Jesi?) were left to find shelter and be hunky alone, or head to the Bring Your Own Big Wheel Race, as many of us did. After a heavy pre-race rain, the gods smiled upon us and the skies cleared, treating us to an afternoon of watching big wheels and other highly unsafe wheeled items fly down the crookedest street in SF, ejecting their brave riders to send them into walls, hay bales, or just tumbling down the street. Hopefully they had insurance…
I’ve been back in SF for a couple weeks now, and am still catching up on work and sorting through photos from Guatemala, so not much new photography to update lately. I’ll post a few from Guatemala once I get through them, but for now, another landmark with a reflecting pool. This one is from a wander through the Presidio a couple weekends ago with a group of mostly East Bay based photographers. We ended up nearby as the sun went down, and, as cliche as it may be, I’d never tried to get a shot of the Palace from across the pool, so we decided to stay for a few photos. Tripod, reflection, long exposure, standing in the cold, and lots of waiting. You know the drill. That tree to the right and the lights out on the left totally ruined my symmetry. 🙂
I was out for a walk on a surprisingly nice Friday evening and stumbled upon testing of the new Bay Lights installation from Leo Villareal on the Bay Bridge, so I just had to make my way to a higher vantage point for a better view. Accompanied by the sounds of a trumpeter playing a string of Journey songs in front of the Ferry Building (this is SF after all..), the twinkling bridge lights paired quite nicely with the rising moon and the Ferry Building, all lit up in red in honor of the 49ers going to the Super Bowl. You can catch the 49ers on Sunday (hopefully to be followed by some healthy non-destructive celebration), while the Bay Lights will officially open on March 5 for a two year run. Check ’em out!
There’s so much emotion to be found in this city, even the inanimate objects get in on the feeling. I found this sad little fella out by Ocean Beach one day. Perhaps it had a little breakdown after one too many days of fog?
This was one of my favorite iPhone shots from the last year, and also just happened to be featured in the year end “1000 Words” showcase over at Juxt. They’re a good community of mobile artists and enthusiasts. You should check them out. 🙂
Hope the holidays have treated you well! I ended up stranded in San Francisco thanks to United Airlines (worst airline ever), but managed to make the best of it and spend some time exploring San Francisco.
I came upon this scene in Union Square, which, with all the shops closed for Christmas Day and the rain pouring down, was eerily deserted. Only a few people braved the weather for a quick photo with the tree or to check out the ice skating rink, which was closed with about an inch of water on the ice.
More streets these days, less hilltops. I was wandering down Market this night and found a line of F-Market street cars and buses backed up down the street. I heard a mention of a pedestrian hit by a car up ahead, but couldn’t confirm the story and never heard any more about it. Hopefully that’s a sign that no one was seriously hurt. Stay safe out there on the street.
