Day 123: Honduras Landing

Day 123: Welcome to Roatan

Day 123: May 3, 2014: Roatan, Honduras

A long day of travel that began at about 3 AM and included two of the roughest, most nerve rattling aircraft landings I’ve ever been through (Thanks, United!), we found ourselves plopped on the west end of Roatan Island off the coast of Honduras just around sundown. What better way to start the week off right than to make a drink and go out to the end of our dock for a sunset dip?

Definitely not the worst place ever.

Day 122: May 2, 2014: End of Portola

End of Portola, the end of this street sign, and the end of a roll of T-Max 100. Finished up just in time to load up with color film for a week in Roatan, Honduras.

Day 121: Portra Mornings

Day x: Morning on Twin Peaks

Day 121: May 1, 2014: Twin Peaks

Another day in the neighborhood. Feeling more ambitious than most mornings, I made it out for a run hour or so after sunrise to check out the neighborhood in a bit different light.

I’m always impressed how well film holds up to bright sunlight in the frame. Looking down 24th from Market Street, I basically was pointing the little snow leopard Sureshot directly at the sun and ended up with pretty good definition, and even a little bit of a star. I think any of my digital cameras would have just given me a big white blob up there. As much as I’m loving film, I’ll never be an either/or kind of guy, as long as both are available. Digital has obvious advantages in some applications, but there are other things that only film can provide. Different tools for different purposes.

Day 120: Black and White Beach Day

Day 120: Warm Spring Evenings

Day 120: April 30, 2014: Ocean Beach

Today was one of those few warm, fog-free days that we get every year around these parts. As such, Ocean Beach was packed, of course. Heading down after work to take in the last moments of warmth at the beach, I was quite glad to have brought the motorcycle. A few thousand extra people on the beach means no parking left anywhere, it seems.

By now that I’m getting around to posting this, our cold foggy summer has passed and we’re back to our September-October summer.

Day 119: Sunset in Golden Gate Park

Day 119: Conservatory of No Flowers

Day 119: April 29, 2014: Conservatory of Flowers, Golden Gate Park

It looks like changing time at the Conservatory of Flowers, waiting for the next batch of flowers to come up.

Dry Cave, Kauaʻi

20141010-IMG_4320

I haven’t posted anything for a bit, mostly on account of being on Kauaʻi, where being on the internet was the last thing on my priorities list. I did have a lot of time to edit photos on the flight, though (and would have had more if my Macbook’s battery lasted a reasonable amount of time..) so should be back to posting the film stuff soon. For now, a shot from the north shore of Kauaʻi.

After hiking the first 4 or so miles in along the Nā Pali Coast this morning, the heat eventually got to us, and since we lacked the permits and equipment to camp, we opted to turn back. It was a hard thing to do with so much beautiful scenery down the trail, but we convinced ourselves it was the responsible thing to do.

All we really wanted after arriving back at the trailhead was to get our aching bodies in the water to cool down, but the 15-20 foot shore break unfortunately put an end to those plans. So, about 10 minutes of getting back out to the rental car, we were stopping to take a glimpse at the roadside Dry Cave and take a little break out of the sun.

As soon as we stepped into the cave, the first of a series of storms hit, with a few minutes of torrential rain. Immediately, we were glad to be off of those narrow cliffside trails before they became treacherous mud and slick rock. Good to know that sometimes the responsible decision pays off. 🙂

Day 112: April 22, 2014: In the Darkness

Spoooooky. Or not. Who am I to tell you what to think? I’ll just leave it at “stairs”. Enjoy the weekend. 🙂
